Building my House/Shop/Etc...

House (1996) I built my house - literally, with the help of several friends.
The only parts I hired out were the concrete work and putting the steel roof on.
It is "Log" construction - where the logs are actually Glulam beams about 10" square.
Curved on the outside like logs, flat on the inside for the wall, and tounge and groove top/bottom.
Note that before the actual house construction could start, I had to do a lot of work cutting the driveways through the woods.
Shop Construction (1997) While the house foundation was just getting started, I built my shop. This was a 42x60 Quonset hut.
It was completed well before the house was, and since I did have a small bathroom in it, I ended up living in it for several months.
Moms Cabin (2002) My mom moved out here to be near family. So we built a cabin for her.
This was a Module Home built to match the look of my House.
Shop Fire (2006) My original shop burned down on July 7, 2006.
As far as the fire marshal could tell, the old motorhome that I had just repaired started burning - probably due to an electrical issue.
The fire burned hot enough that all the aluminum parts in the shop (as well as the wheels of my Pickup that was beside it) melted.
Of course this happened in the middle of the night, and when I woke up and heard some booms - I first thought it was just some idiots setting off their remaining fireworks.
By the time I firgured out the shop was burning, the fire had shorted the wires for the land-line phone.
Due to bad cell coverage, I had to drive my motorcycle out to the corner (note: only wearing a bathrobe) to call the fire dept using my cell phone.
New Shop (2007) Since I had really good homeowners insurance (and a big bonus from work), I was able to make my new shop bigger.
I had a 50x80 Steel building that is insulated built on the site of the old shop.
The link is to a Time-Lapse video of it's construction.
Solar Array (2013) I decided to add some Solar panels to my site - but had the problem of being in the middle of the woods.
Since I didn't want to cut a bunch of trees down, I put the panels up on a tower.
The tower is just a bunch of standard 30' tall Pallet Racking. (like you see in HomeDepot or CostCo).
The array is about 7Kw and is Grid Tied. (I'm working on a battery bank to use.)
BB600 NiCd batteries I'm using some ancient BB600 batteries for my old Taylor Dunn cart.
